If you are a professional in the creative field, this is for you. If you have been applying for jobs, almost all of which are now online, or are a freelancer with clients, it is no secret that an online portfolio is vital to showcase your work and secure the next interview step or leads. Your professional creative field could span from marketing, writing, artwork, to architecture, to web designing, to beauty art (including but not not limited to hairstyling, aesthtician, makeup, eyelash extensions, etc.)

1. Showcase your projects in one place.

Being a creative professional, our work tends to add up over the year(s) and is strewn all over the place digitally or physically. Do you relate? While it is tolerable to have everything in a few files and/or social platforms right now, it might be more sufficient to have them online for easier access. After all, isn’t it a little tedious having say, photos of your projects muddled up with pictures of your kids on your phone (where your clients can’t see)? Moreover, instead of emailing/texting multiple files, being able to send a link makes it way more efficient.

“Personal efficiency is achieved when planning and preparation meet focus and action.” – Ruzanna Hernandez, Ed.D.

2. Stand out from the competition.

Being a creative professional means there is a lot of competition out there. I mean most of us are even competing with AI in this day and age. The nice thing about having your own portfolio is that you can make it however you want it to display all your work. Portfolios can mirror your authenticity and style with their design and execution and give you ample opportunity to stand out. After all, you have achieved your past projects with blood, sweat, and maybe a couple of tears. Don’t let it go to waste.

“Success depends upon previous preparation, and without such preparation, there is sure to be failure.” — Confucius

3. It is the perfect addition to your resume.

To expand on standing out from the competition, this applies advantageously when applying for jobs. These past couple of years have been even more so competitive in the job market for creative professionals. One solution is to add a portfolio to your resume to highlight yourself from the sea of job seekers so that you have a higher chance of taking the bait. Imagine having a link beside your email address where hiring managers can access your experience and projects, where everyone else does not. You are already a top candidate just by being able to show how you can methodically and creatively perform on the job.

“Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort.” – Paul J. Meyer

4. Many jobs now will not consider you without a portfolio.

If you have been accessing Indeed, LinkedIn, or any job-searching tools out there, you may have noticed that many companies hiring for creative positions now require you to include a portfolio. A portfolio is now the new cover letter, or even in some cases, in place of a resume. Nonetheless, portfolios are evolving to be mandatory and you won’t even be considered for the next stage without one.

“I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions.” —Stephen Covey

5. Increase your credibility with your clients.

The thing about most creative careers is that it is mostly sustainable with regular clients, particularly when you are self-employed. Even with being in the job market seeking new customers or employers, credibility is gained with an organized and original portfolio. In your portfolio, on top of your gallery displaying your crafts, you can also include sterling testimonials or reviews, a description about yourself, and even a timeline of your experience – all of which contribute to the well-rounded, trusted hire that is you. After all, what you want to gain is to close the sale and rely on them to knock on your business door in many futures.

“Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work.” – Stephen King

Have you been thinking about fixing your resume and cover letter? If you’re in the market for a new job, now is the best time to cross off that to-do list off of your agenda. But, why now? Read on to find out.

A New Career is a New Year’s Resolution

You’ve probably been contemplating ditching the underpaying corporate position, or your boss just doesn’t value you enough to grant a raise or a promotion. Don’t be sorry you have to go – inflation in this economy sucks, and you have to put yourself first since your boss surely isn’t. It’s time to crawl out of that cocoon and spread your wings. If a new career is a New Year’s resolution, you might as well hop on the train to clean up your resume. After all, you can’t shine if the very thing that’s supposed to place your foot in the door, doesn’t.

January and February are the Best Months to Look for a Job

Did you know that this is in fact, the best time of year to seek a new position elsewhere? Companies are setting annual business goals and adding new members to the team to help fulfill them, as stated by Business News Daily. Now that the holiday season is over, don’t be surprised to see new positions being added to your local job board. Make sure you catch the opportunity now by fully preparing yourself.

New Year, New Career, New You

You Have Finished the Required Educational Certification or Training

If the end of the Fall season was the official declaration of graduation, or you have just completed the certification or license needed for your desired job position, then now is the great time to highlight them in your updated resume. After all, the holidays are over, and you can really focus on landing your dream job. Make that list, and cross it off.

Did you know that I can finish your new resume and/or cover letter in 1-2 days?

Are you stuck figuring out what to gift your writer friend or family member this Christmas? While asking for their book wishlist or getting them a gift card to their favourite coffee store might be the easiest route, you might opt for a more thoughtful and “original” idea that will impress them. Scratch the redundant fountain pen idea and read more to find 6 Gift Ideas in a range of budget that might help your own writer’s block.

*These are suggestions from amazon.ca – of course, if you are not supporters of the big-box company, a simple Google search can take you to alternative sellers

1. Mechanical Keyboard for the Contemporary Writer

If you ask writers what they think about typewriters, most will express enthusiasm for them. While getting them an original typewriter is a grand gesture, you can also go for something more practical in this day and age. Mechanical keyboards fulfill both the typewriter aesthetic and the modern technology – they satisfy the ASMR of keyboard clicking much like typewriters and produce words on the computer screen.

Check out this Wireless Retro Typewriter Keyboard on Amazon for CA$191.63

2. How to Market a Book by Ricardo Fayet for the Writer in Distress

Writers are really good at writing. However, if you follow any writer’s community, you will learn that most of them don’t really have a clue about marketing their books or blog, especially if they are self-publishing or without an agent. Of course, this is not a bad thing; here’s where you come in with your life-saving gift. Fayet lays out actionable steps in an easy-to-read guide to help writers in this unfamiliar realm, and your writer friend will thank you for watching their back.

Hardcover for CA$26.01 and Paperback for CA$15.99

3. Messenger Bag for the Writer with a Favourite Coffee Store

Writers generally have the Oxford Professor look going to portray their brooding, witty nature ready to quote Hemingway or Yeats in a conversation. Or simply, they need an aesthetic bag to store and carry their laptop from coffee shop to library to whiskey bar. If you’re looking for a practical gift for your Writer friend, you can’t go wrong with a messenger bag.

Admire this Quality Leather Bag for CA$166.89 (or an affordable alternative for CA$84.99)

4. A Witty Mug for the Smart-Ass Writer

If you’re on a tight under $20 budget, or opting for a thoughtful Secret Santa gift for your Writer friend, you can opt for a witty mug. You also score bonus points if your friend happens to be a bit of a smart-ass. Moreover, you can acknowledge the usefulness of the mug for tea, coffee, or whiskey – whatever their poison to get the creative juices flowing.

“I am a Writer. Anything you say or do may be used in a story”, or “Author, because Freakin Badass is not an official title” both mugs for under CA$20

5. A leather-bound journal for the Notetaking Writer

Writers have the tendency to carry a notebook around to jot down ideas, feelings, or words they can utilize in someway for their work in progress. Believe it or not, the best idea usually comes at the oddest hour; usually when they are away from their desk. Gift the gift for contemplation. You never know, the very idea they write down in this notebook could be a future New York Times Bestseller.

Look at this Cute Set for CA$64.95 and Single Journal for $36.95

6. Laptop Desk for the Productive Writer in Bed

When you think of Writers writing their novel, poem, short story, or article, you may picture them fixated with their laptop at a desk. The truth is, some Writers have the tendency to change their setting from the desk to couch to kitchen table, to even the bed. It helps get their work done and succumb the writer’s block. The laptop desk stand is an excellent invention for this type of Writer. They can use it for the couch or the bed while enjoying a cup of coffee or a foot rub from their partner (since writing is very hard on the feet).

Find this adjustable, portable stand for $CA69.99

Now while this post may be very helpful for you this gifting season, you deserve all the credit. Don’t forget to sign the very thoughtful holiday card with a relevant quote from their aspirational Author.

Did you know that I also write for a living?

The Next Big Thing https://natashabyrne.ca/2022/11/13/the-next-big-thing/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-next-big-thing Sun, 13 Nov 2022 15:19:53 +0000 https://natashabyrne.ca/?p=943 The post The Next Big Thing appeared first on Tasha the Creator.

One of my biggest strengths is that I don’t procrastinate. If I live in a world where I have a superpower given to me, it’s that I can pause time to be able to accomplish the hundred things I have planned for the day. If I could write a bestselling self-help book, it would be about time management (let’s add that to the list of many, many other things I have to attain). The reason behind my desire to fulfill a multitude of tasks is that it is the one thing I can control in this thing called life where many things are out of our own control.

Now, why is Tasha rambling on about time and her pursuit in finishing up tasks – you may think. If you think it’s because I’m trying to rub it in that I may be better than you, well, that’s where I get misunderstood. I usually amplify the things I’m good at to criticize myself, ironically enough.

I usually amplify the things I’m good at to criticize myself, ironically enough.

The things is, I’m actually going on about time because it’s the one thing I am lacking these days. More positively speaking, my brand-new daughter has been managing my time, and this is not a complaint. For instance, my morning coffee revolves around nursing her and how long she allows me to place her down for.

So to this new challenge to achieve the next big thing – bring it on.

As someone who constantly gets anxious about achieving the next big thing, I would gladly accept a new challenge as something to tackle. Right  now, it’s the juggle between adoring the pair of doe eyes staring at me while I nurse and reaching for my laptop to officiate my new business. Not only is it extremely satisfying completing a demanding task with its perks and rewards, but it is gratifying proceeding in its journey while other people tell you it is impossible.

Just the other day, I closed a customized resume order within 36 hours. While this is often the minimum requirement I offer on a regular basis, the fact that I managed it with child is an accomplishment enough, and I look forward to having the ability to balance the domesticated life with my career – something that has evolved to be a normality among millennials (a controversial topic for another day). Of course, I would not have done it without my loving partner who have taken on joint responsibilities on accustoming our newborn in her delicate months before returning to work. So to this new challenge to achieve the next big thing – bring it on.

Need me in your new project? I design websites and write for fun (and for a living).
